How Charlie Celebrated Her Team USA Selection
When most people see the Team USA uniform, they see the accomplishment.
What they don’t see is everything that came before it.
Charlie’s basketball journey didn’t start as early as many of the athletes she competes against today. She came to the sport later than others, but quickly found her footing. As her skills developed, she continued moving up through different levels of competition, earning opportunities that reflected the work she was putting in both on and off the court.
Then came a setback she never expected.
Between her freshman and sophomore years of high school, Charlie tore her ACL. The injury sidelined her for her entire sophomore season.
For an athlete, that’s a long time to be away from the game you love.
Recovery required patience. It required consistency. And it required believing in a future version of herself before she could fully see it.
But Charlie never stopped moving forward.
When she returned during her junior year, she came back stronger. That season opened doors. College programs began to take notice. Offers started coming in. And then came an opportunity that felt almost surreal.
PhD Hoops reached out about Team USA.
That’s what made this portrait session feel so meaningful.
Not because of the uniform itself.
But because of everything it represents.
The hours spent training. The setbacks she worked through. The moments that tested her. The determination that kept her going.
This session wasn’t simply a celebration of where she’s headed.
It was a chance to honor the road that brought her here.
Charlie recently earned a spot representing Team USA at the Euro Youth Basketball Cup in Spain. To celebrate this milestone, we created basketball portraits at Morey Courts Recreation Center in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, where she trains with her travel team. The session honored her journey from an ACL injury setback to representing her country on an international stage.

Why Morey Courts Was the Perfect Location
Some locations are chosen because they look good.
Others are chosen because they mean something.
For Charlie’s session, Morey Courts Recreation Center in Mount Pleasant was both.
This isn’t just a gym she happened to visit for photos. It’s a place where she trains with her travel team. It’s where she’s spent countless hours developing her game, preparing for tournaments, and continuing to chase goals that once felt far away.
Long before Team USA became part of the story, there were practices.
There were drills.
There were ordinary days that eventually led to an extraordinary opportunity.
That’s why Morey Courts felt like the right place to celebrate this milestone.
And then something unexpected happened.
One of the few courts available that day happened to be the court with a large American flag hanging overhead.
Honestly, it felt like perfect timing.
As Charlie stood beneath that flag wearing her Team USA uniform, there was a sense that everything had come full circle. The place where she continues to train became the place where we documented one of the biggest accomplishments of her athletic career.
I love when locations tell part of the story.
Not because they’re impressive.
But because they’re personal.
And for Charlie, this court was already part of the journey.

Getting Ready for Spain
The Euro Youth Basketball Cup is quickly approaching, and Charlie’s focus has already shifted toward preparation.
The celebration is short.
The work continues.
She’s been spending her summer competing in AAU tournaments, attending practices, and getting into the gym whenever she has the opportunity. The goal isn’t simply to make the team.
The goal is to be ready when the moment arrives.
That’s one of the things I admire most about athletes.
The accomplishments everyone celebrates publicly are usually built on hundreds of quiet decisions that nobody sees. Showing up. Staying committed. Continuing to work when the excitement wears off.
That’s where growth happens.
As exciting as Spain will be, Charlie is already thinking about what comes next.
After high school, she plans to attend college and pursue a career in the medical field while continuing to compete as a student athlete. She’s also considering running track alongside basketball, opening even more opportunities to challenge herself both academically and athletically.
It’s clear that this summer is only one chapter in a much bigger story.
But it’s a chapter worth remembering.
Because opportunities like this don’t happen by accident.
They’re earned.

What Makes Athlete Portrait Sessions Different
One of my favorite things about athlete portrait sessions is that they’re never really about the sport.
At least not entirely.
Yes, the uniform matters.
The equipment matters.
The accomplishments matter.
But what I’m most interested in is the person behind those things.
The confidence that’s been built through years of hard work.
The resilience that develops after setbacks.
The excitement of stepping into a new season and wondering what might be possible.
That’s what I see when I photograph athletes.
For Charlie, this session wasn’t about proving anything.
She’s already done that.
Instead, it was about creating space to pause for a moment and recognize how far she’s come.
Because milestones have a way of passing quickly.
One day you’re training for the opportunity.
The next day you’re living it.
And before you know it, it’s become part of your story.
That’s why I believe seasons like this deserve to be documented while they’re happening.
Not years later.
Not after the next accomplishment arrives.
Right now.
Because this version of you matters too.
Charlie, I can’t wait to see what Spain has in store for you. Thank you for trusting me to document this chapter, and congratulations on an opportunity that is so incredibly well deserved.

Whether you’re celebrating a senior season, a college commitment, a championship run, or an opportunity that’s been years in the making, athlete portrait sessions are about more than accomplishments. They’re about honoring the journey that got you there.
