Kara and David’s love story is not like any other I’d seen before! These two met at the NYC airport on the way to an ultimate frisbee competition. Eight years later, they were on the same team and started dating after Kara worked up the courage to tell David that she liked him during a screening of Sister Act. Two years pass, we’re in the middle of the pandemic and they were driving back to New York after spending time with family in Ohio. During a great conversation about their relationship, somewhere around West Virginia, they decided together to get married! What better way than to pull off the ultimate backyard wedding!
The wedding day
There was rain in the forecast, but it turned out to be a beautiful day for a backyard wedding in Michigan. The family gathered at an AirBNB the couple had rented in Whitemore Lake. On the back patio, there were colorful place settings on the tables with flowers that were picked up that morning at the farmer’s market. Before saying “I do,” David’s mom showered the couple with family heirlooms: his great-grandmothers wedding band and hanky, and a beautiful cake serving set with their names and wedding date engraved.
Kara was a ray of sunshine in her gown by Badgley Mischka and David rocked a tailored suit with a bold tie that matched the red and green floral pattern on Kara’s dress. Their passion for Ultimate Frisbee even played a part on their wedding day. During the ceremony, they had hand outs for their guests with specific team building questions. Each guest spent a few minutes talking to one another about each topic. It was so special to not only watch Kara and David communicate and observe the way they interact with each other, but giving their guests and opportunity to connect with each other was so unique!
Don’t even get me started on their precious vows! Words like these are usually shared in a private note that’s exchanged before a ceremony, but these two were loud and proud and expressed their love, respect and appreciation for each other in front of everyone.
After a yummy dinner from Eat Ann Arbor and delightful gluten free cake from Rumi’s Passion, each of their families got up and performed for the newlyweds! Now, every time I hear “The Humpty Dance” come on, I think of this beautiful backyard wedding!
Check out the party below! I bet you’ll wish you could’ve been there 🙂
